Who is running Proyecto Doctoritas?
Why have we chosen to train only girls?
In most of the world, and especially in Latin America, the status of women is lower than that of men. By choosing to train girls and entrusting them with responsibilities, we hope to empower them in their community. We also wanted to build solidarity and confidence within this group; so, we included lessons with public speaking, team building, and confidence boosting exercises during supplementary training sessions.
How is Proyecto Doctoritas funded?
We rely on donations to keep our project running; we also apply for grants. If you would like to donate or become a sponsor, visit the "Get Involved" and "Contact Us" pages.

It's more than you may have thought!
- Residents of El Triunfo: We want to emphasize that the project belongs to the people of El Triunfo. The project was born in response to their needs and the project continues to exist even though Wellesley College students are not in El Triunfo year-round. Cecilia Campoverde and Delia are our field managers. They are in charge of checking in with the Doctoritas on a bi-monthly basis, and they make sure that their academic performance remains high.
- Students of Wellesley College: Currently, eight students from Wellesley are actively involved in fundraising and maintaining the project with the villagers.
- Gualan Government Health Center (El Centro de Salud, Gualan, Zacapa): Dr. Eugena Portillo, the head physician, and the nurses at the government health center have made an unconditional commitment to educating the doctoritas. They made themselves available to give lectures twice a week for six weeks during the Summer of 2010 in order train the girls. We continue to maintain our relationship with them, and hope to collaborate on a more in-depth curriculum for future Proyecto Doctoritas visits.

What are the future plans for Proyecto Doctoritas after the pilot program ends?
As stated before, we will be assessing the effectiveness of our program after the three years have been completed. At this point we will either make the decision to continue the project, alter the project, or discontinue it. We sincerely believe that we can make a difference in this community and we hope that we are able to continue with the program.
